Benefits of PowaRider
why electric vehicles?

Advances in technology have brought electric vehicles into the mainstream; enabling them to be an extremely practical, cost effective and environmentally friendly form of transport for everyday use. Here are just a few reasons why an electric bike or scooter will be the first choice for millions of people:

Clean and Green
Cheaper
Faster
Easier
Safer
Healthier
Less Red Tape
More Fun!
But Don’t Take Our Word For It…….

Clean and Green

Electric motors emit no pollution at the point of use and while it’s generally true that power stations producing electricity for charging batteries do pollute, their emissions are much easier to control than those from thousands of petrol and diesel powered vehicles (including bio-fuel, which is already being seen as increasingly harmful due to exploitative land use and increased food costs). If you are on a renewable ‘green’ electricity tariff or even generating your own power from a renewable source, then your electric vehicle is truly sustainable - producing zero emissions both at the point of use and from the electricity generated to charge the battery. Furthermore, electric vehicles do not smell or leak fluid and are easy on the ear as well as on the environment, producing close to zero noise pollution.

The amount of energy used by our electric vehicles is very small compared to those that burn fossil fuels. Electric motors are more efficient; having far fewer moving parts and generating less heat than their petrol and diesel counterparts and so wasting far less energy. Electric bikes for example typically consume power at an average rate of 100 to 150 watts of electrical energy – about the same as your average light bulb and just one hundredth of the energy used by a car. Other than electricity to charge the battery, the only consumables are the batteries themselves, and these are recycled when they come to the end of their long life of many thousands of miles.

We can all gain from the environmental benefits made possible by greater use of cleaner and more efficient transport. Using an electric bike or scooter in place of a car on shorter journeys not only improves your carbon footprint but is often a more practical solution.

Cheaper

Fossil fuels are a finite resource – petrol and diesel prices are at their highest ever levels in the UK and will continue to increase worldwide. In the UK, diesel prices have soared 25% in the past year alone, with unleaded up 20% in the same period. Petrol is predicted to reach an eye-watering £1.50 a litre by next year with analysts already forecasting that £2.00 per litre  is on the horizon (over £9.00 per gallon).

With minimal maintenance and fuel charges the new generation of electric vehicles offers a real alternative to spiralling transport costs.

Recharging a battery for an electric bicycle costs around 5p for a range of around 35km (22 miles) - typically a little more for an electric scooter where the range is up to 80km (50 miles). Compared with the equivalent cost for petrol this equates to over 550km per litre of fuel or about 1,500 mpg! There’s no fossil fuel or two-stroke oil to buy, no oil to change and no complex engine to service. With far fewer moving parts they are extremely reliable with minimal servicing and repair costs. There’s no need to buy road tax or pay congestion charges either, as electric vehicles are currently exempt and in many places also enjoy free parking and even free charging in a few city locations.

Finally, evidence shows that electric vehicles hold a high proportion of their original value on resale, should you choose to sell on later.

Faster

Peak time congestion in many of our towns and cities reduces the average traffic speed to less than 10mph. With a maximum power assisted speed over 50% faster than this an electric bicycle can be one of the fastest forms of urban transport. Electric bikes enjoy the same benefits as conventional bicycles - gliding past slower traffic and easing through spaces. They can also take advantage of uncongested cycle routes and bus lanes. Moreover, an electric bike can maintain a higher average speed than a traditional bicycle but without the effort, effectively eliminating hills and headwinds to achieve a faster door-to-door journey time than other urban vehicles.

In the ten new ‘eco-towns’ currently being planned for the UK, where the use of conventional motor vehicles will be kept to a minimum, the speed limit for ALL road traffic will be 15mph – the same as the legally restricted speed of electric bikes!

Easier

Electric bikes and scooters can carry you for miles with little or no effort and can be recharged anywhere that you can find a power supply or low batteries can be swapped instantly with fully charged batteries.

If you enjoy cycling but find the effort of riding a conventional pedal cycle too taxing an electric bicycle could be just the answer. Also, keen cyclists will benefit from being able to embark on longer journeys than they might otherwise consider, achieving a far greater distance at much less effort than a conventional bicycle. Furthermore electric bikes and scooters make light work of hills and headwinds, increasing your average speed and enabling you to tackle previously arduous journeys with ease.

Perspiration may not be a concern when you're out for a leisurely ride but it is a different matter if you're cycling to work. An electric bike solves this problem – with less effort required for the same speed and distance you’ll perspire less than you would when riding a conventional bicycle, leaving you more energy for your busy day ahead.

Using an electric bike or scooter in place of a car on shorter journeys can be so much easier as well as kinder to the environment. With no hindrances along the way your journey will be hassle free and you’ll be able to park for free right at your destination – without wasting time and money searching for an elusive car parking space. With rear racks as well as optional panniers and baskets on our electric bikes and trikes, plus under-seat storage and an optional back box on our electric scooters - a quick shopping trip into town is exactly that.

Safer

Straining to climb hills and pulling away at road junctions in heavy traffic on a conventional bike can be extremely daunting. An electric bicycle provides controlled acceleration and consistent speed - bestowing the rider with a far greater sense of safety and confidence in a busy urban environment.

Healthier

Ok, we’ve already said that our electric bikes require little or no effort and make life easier so how can we also make health and fitness claims? A conventional bicycle will generally keep you much fitter, but that of course depends on how much your use it. Research from the Transport Research Laboratory in the UK (Davis and Hartley 1998) has shown that 46% of conventional bicycles are only used twice a week, with a further 30% used only twice a month or less. However, a report from Leeds University (Neil Guthrie 2001) compiled from a survey of Powabyke owners revealed that a third of respondents used their bikes at least once a day and 81% used their electric bikes at least once a week. Therefore an electric bike typically gets used at least twice as often as a conventional bicycle – helping to keep you fitter.

Less Red Tape

In the UK all electric vehicles are currently exempt from both road tax and congestion charges. In addition electric bikes (which are classed as bicycles in the UK) do not require registration, a licence, a log book, an MOT or compulsory insurance. Powered transport without any paperwork!

More Fun!

We’re serious about electric vehicles but we can’t overlook how much fun they are! Gliding along the road in near silence has been described to us as the nearest thing to a magic carpet ride!
